Alice brushes off Maconâs concerns about her health as we make our way to his side of the island, telling him that sheâs slept enough to make this journey and to stop worrying. Like Mom with me earlier. When we near the edge of the forest, we hang back. We want to be sure no one else is around.
âDad and Jack are out on the boat, but I donât know what Mom was doing this morning. I donât want to run into her with you.â He squeezes Aliceâs hand.
Alice smiles, touches his face, and then focuses on the house. After a moment she says, âShe is in the back of the dwelling where the machines are turning.â
âThe laundry room.â Macon nods.
âYour beast is with her.â
âHow can you possibly know that?â Jane asks.
âThe house is made of wood. I feel where they are.â Alice sounds like Ellie and Odele when they explain siren things. Like it should be obvious.
âCan you do that?â I ask Macon.
âI have no idea.â
We make it down to the coast without Alice or Beau, the dog, seeing us. The fog has lifted, and we set out in Maconâs boat. Macon surprises me by saying he dropped a GPS pin the last time we were there, so he knows exactly where to go this time. As we skip over the waves, Jane asks for my phone again and looks at the pictures.
âThis one,â I say, pointing to the âseparationâ page. âAnd the next one, those are the rituals that we donât understand.â
âWhereâs the book that these came from?â
âItâs an old journal. It belongs to one of Maconâs⦠well, our friends, Wolf?â I donât know if Jane has ever met him.
She screws her face up. âI met him in town, once or twice, right, Macon?â
âYeah, I think so. Dark hair and eyes, shorter than me.â
âA little weird?â
âWellâ¦â Macon rolls his shoulders without commitment.
âI suppose thatâs all relative these days.â She says it under her breath, but I catch it.
âWolf has the ability toâ Wolf knows things.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHe knew I wasnât from here, and Macon too. He gets a feeling about things, sees the truth of them. And he says that thereâs something off about these pages.â
Jane presses her face so close to the screen I donât know how she can see properly.
âYou did not say. How do you open passageways?â Odele asks Alice.
Alice pauses for a moment before saying, âI can feel through.â
âWhat does that mean?â Jane asks.
âI can sense something on the other side, like a connection, and that helps me create a bridge across.â
Jane scribbles something in her notebook, and my face must show what Iâm thinking because she says, âThis is for my own use, donât worry. No one else will see it.â
âWeâre getting close, Cam.â Macon motions for me to come up by him.
âOdele?â I say, as Macon slows the boat. Iâm already leaning over the side to wet my hand. I press the salt water to my face and allow my siren vision to fill my eyes.
