Alice brushes off Macon’s concerns about her health as we make our way to his side of the island, telling him that she’s slept enough to make this journey and to stop worrying. Like Mom with me earlier. When we near the edge of the forest, we hang back. We want to be sure no one else is around.

“Dad and Jack are out on the boat, but I don’t know what Mom was doing this morning. I don’t want to run into her with you.” He squeezes Alice’s hand.

Alice smiles, touches his face, and then focuses on the house. After a moment she says, “She is in the back of the dwelling where the machines are turning.”

“The laundry room.” Macon nods.

“Your beast is with her.”

“How can you possibly know that?” Jane asks.

“The house is made of wood. I feel where they are.” Alice sounds like Ellie and Odele when they explain siren things. Like it should be obvious.

“Can you do that?” I ask Macon.

“I have no idea.”

We make it down to the coast without Alice or Beau, the dog, seeing us. The fog has lifted, and we set out in Macon’s boat. Macon surprises me by saying he dropped a GPS pin the last time we were there, so he knows exactly where to go this time. As we skip over the waves, Jane asks for my phone again and looks at the pictures.

“This one,” I say, pointing to the “separation” page. “And the next one, those are the rituals that we don’t understand.”

“Where’s the book that these came from?”

“It’s an old journal. It belongs to one of Macon’s… well, our friends, Wolf?” I don’t know if Jane has ever met him.

She screws her face up. “I met him in town, once or twice, right, Macon?”

“Yeah, I think so. Dark hair and eyes, shorter than me.”

“A little weird?”

“Well…” Macon rolls his shoulders without commitment.

“I suppose that’s all relative these days.” She says it under her breath, but I catch it.

“Wolf has the ability to— Wolf knows things.”

“What do you mean?”

“He knew I wasn’t from here, and Macon too. He gets a feeling about things, sees the truth of them. And he says that there’s something off about these pages.”

Jane presses her face so close to the screen I don’t know how she can see properly.

“You did not say. How do you open passageways?” Odele asks Alice.

Alice pauses for a moment before saying, “I can feel through.”

“What does that mean?” Jane asks.

“I can sense something on the other side, like a connection, and that helps me create a bridge across.”

Jane scribbles something in her notebook, and my face must show what I’m thinking because she says, “This is for my own use, don’t worry. No one else will see it.”

“We’re getting close, Cam.” Macon motions for me to come up by him.

“Odele?” I say, as Macon slows the boat. I’m already leaning over the side to wet my hand. I press the salt water to my face and allow my siren vision to fill my eyes.
